ABOUT US

The Academic Support Center (ASC) is home to three programs designed to help students stay in the university until they have received their bachelor degree. Student Support Services (SSS) and Washington TRiO Expansion Program (WaTEP) are federally funded TRiO programs, while the Program Leading to Undergraduate Success (PLUS) is funded by Eastern Washington University.

The ASC has successfully helped EWU students graduate for over 30 years. The six year graduation rate for the 2005-2006 cohort was 17.7% higher than the overall graduation rate for the university.

The ASC is staffed with committed individuals such as Retention Specialists who work closely with students in order to ensure their academic success. Independent scholarship abilities and effective group collaboration is taught, cultivated, and emphasized through small group instruction, one-on-one tutoring, and intrusive advising. Student involvement is high, and the staff provides the necessary skills for academic success. Such skills include but are not limited to the following listed below:

• Lecture/chapter note-taking
• Test-taking strategies
• Time/stress management

• Reading to identify key information
• Advising for academic, career, and life choices

TECHNOLOGY

The ASC is equipped with 39 desktop computers (6 in Kingston Hall's ASC Math Lab and 4 at Riverpoint's Student Success Center). They are available with internet access as well as the full range of software applications that are used in the PUB computer lab. There is also free black and white printing from ASC printers and direct print access to the MARS lab color laser and large format printers.

Additionally, the ASC has 2 full multimedia classrooms available for student use such as quiet study areas, and practicing presentations, or small group work. There are also extra network ports available for laptop hook-up (wireless access anticipated in the Fall 2008 quarter), and general student computer access.

There are also 12 laptop computers available for long-term check out with priority for TRiO students and for EWU students with a demonstrated academic need.

The ASC is in the process of developing computer workstations with enhanced accessibility for EWU's disabled students. Some of our computers are currently equipped with sceen readers (JAWS and WYNN), screen magnifier (ZoomText) and 'speech-to-text' recognition (Dragon Naturally Speaking) software.

WEB SERVICES

The ASC website provides additional study resources as supplemental options for regular study habits. The Student Resources section on the website offers a variety of shortcuts to important EWU and financial aid links, language translation, college study tips, and several offsite references such as online dictionaries, encyclopedias, calculators, converters, and news and weather resources

COST

The ASC provides services free to those students who are TRiO eligible and have enrolled at the office. Computers and printers were purchased with university funds and are free to any EWU student who has registered with the ASC though priority will be given first to TRiO students.
