ABOUT
THE SCHOLARSHIP
Eastern
Washington University’s
(EWU) TRiO Student Support Services (SSS)
is a federally funded program whose mission
is to assist low-income first generational
students overcome academic and economic
barriers in order to persist and graduate
with a baccalaureate degree. Annually,
EWU’s SSS program serves over 300
eligible students through academic support
in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics,
and supplemental instruction. The program
serves student who have overcome many
obstacles to higher education, yet has
been able to maintain a 50% six-year
graduation rate that exceeds that of
the overall university graduation rate.
However, beyond just academic support,
the SSS program also offers other assistance
to students.
Over the last
30 years, EWU’s SSS
program has awarded thousands of dollars
in academic grants to low-income first
generational students. Financial barriers
can be the limiting factor in whether
a student has access to a four-year
degree and how successful they are once
in college.
TRiO scholarships are just one way
to help students overcome these barriers
while in college.
EWU’s
TRiO scholarships are entirely funded by
donations from alumni, interested
individuals, and community organizations
with a similar mission of waging war
on poverty. Presently, thanks to donors,
we are able to award one scholarship
of $1,000 that goes towards the student’s
education. This scholarship is not intended
to be an award for g.p.a. only, but rather
to be an award that encourages persistence
toward degree completion by assisting
to overcome a significant financial barrier.
Last
year’s
recipient of a $1,000 TRiO Scholarship, Theresa
Davis says, “The
ASC and TRiO program have helped me on
many different levels from: academic
skills, to advising, to financial assistance
by selecting me as the 2006 TRiO Scholarship
recipient”. She goes on to add
that, “Tuition is constantly increasing
and the opportunities for alternative
means of paying for college are decreasing.
The TRiO Scholarship money was applied
to my loan debt which is a huge help
with keeping the cost of college down”.
Thanks
to the folks who have donated to this
scholarship,
students like
Theresa Davis are able to have the
opportunity for an enriching college
experience.
